Junior Programs
At Maywood Racquets Club, we believe great tennis players are built through great habits — and that the most valuable thing we can give a young player is a structured, patient, and genuinely enjoyable environment to develop them.
Our junior program is both a development pathway and a community. Players build technical skills and tactical awareness alongside confidence, resilience, and friendships that often last well beyond the court. Our coaches know names, not just rankings — and every player, from the youngest beginner to our most competitive juniors, is treated as a whole person, not just a work in progress.
The pathway follows ten progressive levels built on the principles of Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD) and the ITF Play+Stay framework. Each level has a clear purpose, defined learning outcomes, and a proficiency-based progression process — so every student advances when they're ready, not simply when a session ends.
Fall 2026 SESSION
• Enrollment for the Fall Session is now open.
• The Fall 2026 Session begins on September 8th and ends on December 23rd.
• There will be no classes on Wednesday, November 25th or Thursday, November 26th for Thanksgiving Break.
• An evaluation may be required prior to enrollment.
• New members will need to create an account prior to enrollment. You can create an account through our website by clicking Member Account. Once created, you will also be able to use the mobile app by downloading CourtReserve onto your mobile device.
• Enrollment: Enroll directly through CourtReserve.
HOW PLACEMENT WORKS
Every new student is placed through a brief assessment process before their first session. Here's what to expect:
• Players aged 8 and older receive a complimentary on-court placement evaluation conducted by one of our lead coaches. The session takes approximately 10 minutes and covers movement, ball-striking, rally ability, and competitive readiness.
• Players under 8 without prior playing experience do not require an evaluation. They will be placed in our red ball program.
• Following the evaluation, we confirm your child's recommended level.
• All online enrollments are subject to coach approval. If a placed student needs an adjustment after their first class, we'll reach out directly.
• To book a placement evaluation, email juniorclinics@maywoodracquetsclub.com or call (201) 843-2022.
HOW PROGRESSION WORKS
Every student advances based on demonstrated skill, not age alone. Our coaches evaluate each player at the end of every session using defined proficiency benchmarks to determine readiness for the next level.
For Red Ball players, this includes a structured proficiency assessment before advancement. From Orange Ball onward, progression is based on ongoing coach evaluation and session-end review.
When your child is ready to move up, we'll tell you — and we'll tell you exactly why.
Red Ball
LEVELS | AGES 5 TO 10
-
Ages 5–8 | No prior experience required
Red Ball 1 is where the tennis journey begins. On a scaled 36-foot court with a low-compression red ball, young players develop the physical literacy that underpins all future tennis skill: body awareness, balance, tracking, and spatial orientation. The focus at this stage is not yet on strokes — it is on habits. Players learn to set up in a ready position, move toward an incoming ball, and make contact in front of their body with control. Those habits are what make everything else in tennis possible. A child who finishes their first Red Ball 1 session may not look like a tennis player yet — but they are becoming one.
-
Ages 5–10 | Red Ball 1 graduate or coach-assessed placement
Red Ball 2 is where physical habits become tennis skills. Players begin to produce shape, direction, and consistency in their groundstrokes — and for the first time, the ball goes somewhere intentional. There is something genuinely exciting about the first sustained rally: the moment a player realises they can keep it going. Training centres on cooperative rally development, sustaining three to five ball exchanges with a partner, alongside net clearance awareness and basic court recovery patterns. Players learn that every shot has a purpose: clear the net with margin, direct the ball, and get ready for the next one. A Red Ball 2 graduate can sustain a short cooperative rally and is beginning to feel what tennis is actually supposed to feel like.
-
Ages 5–10 | Red Ball 2 graduate or coach-assessed placement
Red Ball 3 is where players become ready to compete. The physical and technical skills built in Levels 1 and 2 are now applied in structured, game-based situations. Players develop a repeatable serve, learn to return a simple delivery, and begin playing short points with correct scoring. For many players, this is the first time tennis feels like a real game — with a beginning, a middle, and an end. A Red Ball 3 graduate can serve, rally, keep score, and play a short-format competitive point. They are not yet Orange Ball players — but they are ready to become one.

Orange Ball
-
Ages 8–11 | Red Ball 3 graduate or coach-assessed placement
Orange Ball 1 marks the first major step up: from the 36-foot red ball court to the 60-foot orange ball court. The ball travels faster and bounces higher; the court demands more movement, more precise footwork, and greater rally endurance. The primary goal at this level is building consistent, repeatable groundstrokes from the baseline — shots that clear the net with margin and land with direction. Athletic movement skills, including agility, court coverage, and weight transfer, are developed alongside stroke mechanics, reflecting our commitment to developing complete athletes, not just tennis strokes. An Orange Ball 1 graduate can sustain baseline rallies with consistency and is beginning to direct the ball with genuine intention.
-
Ages 8–11 | Orange Ball 1 graduate or coach-assessed placement
Orange Ball 2 applies the consistency of Level 1 to competitive situations. Players begin constructing points — not just hitting shots — through foundational tactical patterns: building crosscourt, creating angles, and recognising when to attack. Serve development takes centre stage, with players working toward a reliable, directional delivery and an effective return. Physical conditioning and competitive match exposure are woven into training at this level, alongside the mental disciplines that competition demands: staying composed, resetting between points, and competing with focus and sportsmanship. An Orange Ball 2 graduate is technically, physically, and mentally ready for the full-length court.

Green Ball
-
Ages 10+ | Orange Ball 2 graduate or coach-assessed placement
Green Ball 1 represents one of the most significant transitions in junior tennis development. Players move to the full 78-foot court for the first time, using a low-compression green ball that simulates yellow ball play while giving players time to adjust to its new demands. Everything learned on the orange court must now be recalibrated for greater distance, speed, and court coverage. Training at this level prioritises technical consolidation — rebuilding reliable mechanics under new physical conditions — with particular focus on footwork, athletic recovery position, and depth of shot. Physical preparation is developed alongside technical work: players begin structured on-court conditioning that supports the greater demands of the full-length game. A Green Ball 1 graduate is comfortable on the full court and striking the ball with consistent technique from both wings.
-
Ages 10+ | Green Ball 1 graduate or coach-assessed placement
Green Ball 2 is where players become complete junior competitors. With a stable technical foundation in place, training shifts toward tactical pattern recognition, point construction, and competitive match play. Players learn to build points with purpose — identifying their strengths, exploiting space on the court, and making smart decisions under pressure. Physical conditioning is integrated as a consistent part of training, alongside the mental discipline of competing over the course of a full match. Players are regularly exposed to match play situations and UTR-rated competition, and are assessed on their ability to apply their skills when it counts. A Green Ball 2 graduate is technically, physically, and mentally ready for the yellow ball program.

Ages 12+ | New and returning junior players | Green Ball graduate or coach-assessed placement (
Yellow Development is the entry point into full tennis — full court, full ball, full scoring. Designed for teenagers who are either new to the game or returning after time away, this level has one central mission: build proper technical habits before they become improper ones. Players receive focused coaching on stroke production, footwork patterns, and spatial awareness, with an emphasis on sound mechanics that will hold up under pressure as training advances. Through structured progressions, deliberate repetition, and game-based application, players develop the motor patterns and technical foundation needed to rally, compete, and continue improving. The players who progress the fastest are the ones who get the fundamentals right — and this is the level where we make sure they do.
